Study & Flashcards

The Study page combines spaced-repetition flashcards with an AI-powered knowledge assistant. You can quiz yourself on your notes, synthesise topic summaries, and generate new flashcards — all in one place.

Topic Search

Enter a topic or question in the search bar to find relevant notes in your knowledge base. OikoNotes uses semantic search to surface notes even when the wording differs from your query.

Select one or more notes from the results to use as context for the AI assistant or to generate flashcards from.

AI Knowledge Chat

The chat interface lets you have a conversation grounded in your own notes. Each AI response includes citations linking back to the source notes, so you can verify and explore further. The assistant also suggests follow-up questions to deepen your understanding.

Flashcard Decks

Flashcards are organised into decks. Create a new deck from the Study page or use an existing one. Decks can be:

 • Named after a subject, course, or project
 • Populated manually or via AI generation
 • Reviewed in spaced-repetition order

Generating Flashcards

Select notes from the topic search results, choose a target deck, and click Generate Flashcards. The AI extracts key facts and concepts and creates front/back card pairs. Cards are proposed for review — you accept or reject each one before it enters the deck.

When auto-generate flashcards is enabled in settings, the AI pipeline proposes cards for permanent and literature notes automatically as they are processed. You approve or reject them from the Process Queue.

Topic Synthesis

Click Synthesise Summary to generate a concise overview of a topic based on selected notes. The summary can be saved as a new permanent note or exported directly.

Spaced Repetition

OikoNotes uses a spaced-repetition algorithm to schedule card reviews. Cards you find easy are shown less frequently; cards you find difficult appear sooner. The key settings are:

 • Daily card limit — caps the total cards (new + due) shown per session.
 • New cards per day — how many previously unseen cards are introduced each day.

Adjust these in Settings → Study & Flashcards.

Settings

Configure Study in Settings → Study & Flashcards:

 • Daily card limit — maximum cards per study session (default 20).
 • New cards per day — new cards introduced daily before spaced repetition takes over (default 10).
 • Show hints — display the hint field during review when available.
 • Auto-generate flashcards — let the AI pipeline propose cards when notes are processed.

Tips

 • Start with a small daily limit (10–15 cards) and increase it once reviewing feels comfortable.
 • Use the AI chat to explore a topic before generating flashcards — it helps you identify the concepts worth drilling.
 • Flashcards generated from your own notes are more memorable than generic ones because the examples and phrasing already match your mental models.
 • Review daily, even briefly — spaced repetition only works when the intervals are maintained.
