If OikoNotes disappears
OikoNotes is built by one person. That is a fair reason to ask what happens to your notes if the service ever closes. Here is the honest answer.
01 — The format
Your notes are Markdown, not a private format.
Every note is stored as Markdown. Tags, links and search indexes are built from that Markdown, so nothing you wrote lives only inside OikoNotes.
02 — Export
Export is one click. Try it today.
- Open Settings, then Export & Backup.
- Choose Export All Notes. You get a ZIP of Markdown files, one per note.
- Open a few files in any text editor, or import them into another notes app.
Export stays available if you cancel a plan.
03 — No server needed
The Linux app keeps working on its own.
The Linux desktop app keeps your notes and files on your own computer, works offline and needs no account. If the cloud service stopped tomorrow, the app on your machine would carry on.
Keep a local backup04 — The promise
At least 90 days' notice, with export kept open.
If the OikoNotes service ever closes, every customer gets at least 90 days' notice, and export stays open for the whole notice period.
05 — The risk
Why one person is a real risk.
A one-person service can be interrupted by illness, a hardware failure or plain bad luck. The answer here is not a promise that nothing will ever go wrong. It is making sure your notes never depend on OikoNotes being around: plain Markdown, an export you can test today, and an app that runs without a server.
Keep a copy on your own machine.
The Linux app is free, works offline and keeps every note on your own computer.
The Linux app is free and needs no account. Paid plans open with the paid beta on 7 December 2026, for UK customers first.
